Accounting, Tax and VAT Practice Lead

Accounting, Tax and VAT
United Kingdom
Full-time

A senior practice role for an experienced accountant who wants real influence, direct access to leadership and the opportunity to help build a modern accounting, tax and VAT service line.

About the Role

There are plenty of senior accountancy roles that promise progression. Very few give you the opportunity to work directly with the Managing Partner and help shape a new service line from the ground up.

This one does.

Sterling Legal Solutions is a London-based legal, corporate and business advisory firm supporting companies, entrepreneurs, private clients, family offices and international businesses. We are now building our Accounting, Tax and VAT practice as part of our wider corporate, private client and international advisory platform.

We are looking for a Senior Accounts Manager / Accounting, Tax & VAT Practice Lead to help develop, manage and supervise this new practice area.

The role combines senior technical delivery with operational leadership. You will help create the systems, workflows, service packages and review processes needed to deliver high-quality accounting, tax, VAT, payroll and financial reporting support to clients.

This is not a routine back-office role. You will be trusted to make decisions, improve processes, supervise junior support and help build a professional, scalable and well-controlled accounting function within a growing advisory firm.

You will work closely with the Managing Partner and wider team, with the opportunity to influence how the practice is built, how clients are serviced and how the accounting and tax offering integrates with our corporate services, private client, family office and international market-entry work.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Building and managing the firm’s accounting, tax and VAT service line

  • Developing service packages for bookkeeping, VAT, payroll, corporation tax, management accounts and financial reporting

  • Selecting and implementing accounting software, workflow tools and internal systems

  • Creating templates, checklists, review procedures and delivery standards

  • Reviewing bookkeeping, reconciliations, VAT returns, payroll outputs, management accounts and corporation tax work

  • Supervising junior accountants, bookkeepers, payroll support and offshore operational staff

  • Supporting client onboarding, file setup, deadlines and internal delivery workflows

  • Acting as the technical point of contact for accounting, VAT, payroll and tax compliance matters

  • Ensuring client records, filings, deadlines and deliverables are properly managed

  • Working with the Managing Partner on process improvements, pricing structures and service development

  • Helping integrate the accounting function with wider corporate, private client and family office work

Requirements

  • ACA, ACCA, CTA, ATT, AAT or equivalent qualification, or strong equivalent practical experience
  • Minimum 7+ years’ experience in accountancy practice, tax, VAT, payroll or client accounting services
  • Strong UK accounting and tax compliance experience
  • Experience reviewing bookkeeping, VAT returns, payroll, management accounts and corporation tax work
  • Experience using cloud accounting software such as Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, Sage or similar platforms
  • Ability to build workflows, templates, checklists and internal systems
  • Experience supervising junior staff or offshore support teams
  • Confident dealing with HMRC, client deadlines, compliance processes and financial records
  • Strong written and spoken English
  • Commercial and organised
  • Experience creating fixed-fee packages or subscription-style accounting services would be desirable
  • Experience with AML-supervised accountancy or corporate services businesses would be beneficial
  • Experience supporting SMEs, owner-managed businesses, SPVs, holding companies, private clients or family office structures would be beneficial

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to build a new accounting, tax and VAT practice from the ground up
  • Remote or hybrid working arrangement
  • Direct access to senior decision-making
  • Opportunity to shape software, systems, workflows, packages and delivery standards
  • A modern advisory environment combining corporate, legal, private client and international services
  • Long-term opportunity to become a key senior figure within the firm
  • Competitive salary depending on experience
